We are researching traditional primary food production methods.
This short introductory sentence contains three words that we would first like to define in more detail in order to define our research project.
To do this, we will fall back on dry "legalese":
Food means "any substance or product, whether processed, partially processed or unprocessed, intended to be, or reasonably expected to be ingested by humans.
"Food" includes drink [...] and any substance, including water, intentionally incorporated into the food during its manufacture, preparation or treatment." 1)
As "plants prior to harvesting" - from a purely legal point of view - do not belong to food, we would like to mention at this point that in our research on the production of plant-based foods, we document in particular their cultivation and harvesting process.2) The same applies to animal foods. We consider the entire production process up to slaughter, although "live animals unless they are prepared for placing on the market for human consumption" are not considered food.3)
The term primary production legally means "the production, rearing or growing of primary products including harvesting, milking and farmed animal production prior to slaughter. It also includes hunting and fishing and the harvesting of wild products". 4)
Our definition of food production methods in terms of primary production therefore also includes the slaughtering process.

We will look at the third important term, traditional, in our next blog post:
